Children's Literature for Kid's with Special Needs - the phrase itself implies that people without some kind of special challenge can pass these titles by without consideration. I could go on for paragraphs on what qualifies as "good literature" but suffice it to say that we all have stories that speak to us because of setting, characters, or place - even though they may be out of our realm of personal experience. Any one ever actually travel to Middle Earth?
Jerk California by Jonathan Freisen is a book about self discovery and a road trip. The fact that the main character has Tourette Syndrome adds to the depth and power of the narrative. This book can be enjoyed by any teenager who is coping with family, loss, and romance. A final note about this book, the author has Tourette Syndrome and writes with an affect that is disarming and real.
Punk Wig by Lori Ries is narrated by a little boy whose mother has cancer, or what he calls “alien blobs inside her.” They go shopping for a wig when she begins chemotherapy. Beautiful watercolors and simple text make this a great book for young children.We will be discussing Children and Young Adult Literature in class on October 22nd.
