Children's Literature

Children's Literature for Kid's with Special Needs - the phrase itself implies that people without some kind of special challenge can pass these titles by without consideration. I could go on for paragraphs on what qualifies as "good literature" but suffice it to say that we all have stories that speak to us because of setting, characters, or place - even though they may be out of our realm of personal experience. Any one ever actually travel to Middle Earth?

Jerk California by Jonathan Freisen is a book about self discovery and a road trip. The fact that the main character has Tourette Syndrome adds to the depth and power of the narrative. This book can be enjoyed by any teenager who is coping with family, loss, and romance. A final note about this book, the author has Tourette Syndrome and writes with an affect that is disarming and real.

Punk Wig by Lori Ries is narrated by a little boy whose mother has cancer, or what he calls “alien blobs inside her.” They go shopping for a wig when she begins chemotherapy. Beautiful watercolors and simple text make this a great book for young children.

We will be discussing Children and Young Adult Literature in class on October 22nd. Post a children's or young adult book that you use, or would like to use, related to speech and language disorders.

Temple Grandin is an associate professor of animal science at Colorado State University. She has designed one-third of all livestock handling facilities in the United States with the goal of decreasing the fear and pain animals experience in the slaughter process. She credits her ability to develop animal facilities with the fact that she has autism. Temple Grandin wrote an essay for the This I Believe series on national Public Radio.

APA and DOI Confusion

I've created a new area on this blog to highlight blogs, web sites, and resources. A colleague just let me know that APA is hosting a blog to field questions about the new 6th edition. In a recent blog, a flow chart was posted for using DOIs.

CSD 589 Student Blog Project

All the graduate students in CSD 589 are creating blogs to share information and thoughts on their research and studies.
